More Like a Love Letter

Think of Dark Horses as a letter.

You may discover it’s very much a letter to you.

It’s written especially to people sometimes called “the Dones” or “de-churched”—people who have stepped away from conventional institutional church but haven’t necessarily walked away from Jesus, faith, community or participation in his Kingdom.

Some left because they wanted something more. Some never felt like they fit. Some asked too many questions. Some were disappointed, betrayed or hurt. Others simply realized that following Jesus and participating in his Kingdom might look different than they had been taught.

If that sounds like you, I want you to hear something clearly:

You are seen. Jesus sees you.
You are loved. Your messy journey doesn’t change that.
You belong. Jesus has a place for you at his table.
You matter. You have a meaningful part in God’s Kingdom.
You’re not done. Jesus isn’t finished with you.

Leaving church doesn’t automatically make someone courageous or right. Sometimes our departures are messy. Mine was. Part of healing is honestly asking what belongs to us, making things right where we can, and continuing forward.

And to those who were abused, manipulated or misled by church leaders or communities, I want to say something personally:

I’m sorry.

I spent years helping promote a system that has done tremendous good, but has also sometimes protected power, manipulation and behavior that dishonors Jesus. I’ve had to repent and change direction myself.

I hope Dark Horses becomes more than someone else’s story.

I hope it becomes an invitation—to rediscover Jesus, purpose, community and the wild possibilities of his Kingdom.

And if this letter is addressed to you?

Welcome to the herd.

As I prayed and reflected on the idea of Dark Horses, another image kept coming to mind: the knight on a chessboard. At first, the connection was obvious. It’s a horse. But the more I thought about it, the more meaningful the symbol became. I’m not a great chess player, though I enjoy playing occasionally…

One moment from that trip has stayed with me ever since. Our group of Americans had just come out of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. Christians…
