Are You a Dark Horse?
Maybe you still love Jesus, but your relationship with church has changed.
Maybe you stepped away.
Maybe you’re still attending but no longer feel like you quite fit.
Maybe you were hurt, disappointed, restless, or simply hungry for more.
Whatever brought you here, welcome.
Dark Horses is for people who may have stepped outside conventional church structures but are anything but done with Jesus or his Kingdom mission.
YOU’RE NOT A PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED
People who leave church are sometimes described as backsliders, casualties, complainers, rebels, or people who simply gave up.
We see something else.
We see people Jesus loves.
People with questions worth asking.
People with gifts, relationships, experience, creativity, and Kingdom potential.
So if your journey has left you feeling overlooked or displaced, we want you to hear this:
You are seen.
You are loved.
You belong.
You matter.
You’re not done.

SO WHAT IS A DARK HORSE?
A dark horse is someone who has been overlooked or underestimated—someone whose potential isn’t obvious at first.
That’s the metaphor.
Dark Horses are unconventional followers of Jesus who want to keep moving toward him, toward healthy community, and toward meaningful participation in his Kingdom.
The label isn’t meant to put you in another box.
It’s simply a way of saying:
Maybe stepping outside the familiar doesn’t mean your story is over.
THIS ISN’T A PROTEST MOVEMENT
It isn’t a deconstruction echo chamber.
It isn’t another denomination.
And we’re not interested in building a tribe that needs everyone else to be wrong.
Many of us are deeply grateful for what we received through traditional churches. Many people we love still follow Jesus faithfully within them.
We want to be:
curious without becoming cynical,
free without becoming arrogant,
and courageous without becoming contemptuous.
WE’D RATHER TALK ABOUT WHAT WE’RE RUNNING TOWARD
We’d rather build our identity around what we’re for than what we’re against.
We’re running toward:
Clarity — asking honest questions and pursuing truth.
Freedom — not from Jesus or healthy accountability, but unnecessary religious control.
Creativity — following Jesus into unexpected people and places.
Authentic community — relationships where we can be known, challenged, and loved.
Unity — remaining part of the larger family of Jesus even when our paths differ.
Participation — ordinary people stepping into Jesus’ mission.
UNBRIDLED DOESN’T MEAN UNTETHERED
Wild horses don’t live alone.
They run in bands.
Dark Horses need people too.
Following Jesus outside conventional structures isn’t an invitation to spiritual independence. It’s an invitation to rediscover community without assuming it must always take the form we knew before.
WHAT’S A KINGDOM EXPRESSION?
Ordinary Life, Kingdom Eyes.
You don’t need a ministry title, church program, or complicated strategy to participate in Jesus’ mission.
Look at the life you already have.
The people you already know.
The places you already go.
The abilities and resources already in your hands.
We call the intersection of those things your Kingdom Expression—the ordinary context where you intentionally participate in what Jesus is doing.

The knight in chess moves differently from every other piece.
It takes unexpected angles and can leap over obstacles.
That’s why it became our symbol.
Not because unconventional is automatically better.
But because following Jesus sometimes means taking a path others didn’t expect.
We don’t want to be different just to be different.
We want the freedom and courage to follow Jesus wherever he leads.

A NOTE TO OUR FRIENDS WHO STILL LOVE THEIR CHURCH
We’re not against you.
Many of you are our friends, family members, pastors, and fellow disciples.
Some of us may even still worship beside you.
We may choose different structures and practices, but we belong to the same family.
Dark Horses should fight for unity even when we choose different paths.
AND A NOTE TO THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN HURT
We won’t rush you.
Some people arrive here carrying real wounds from Christian leaders or communities.
Your pain doesn’t need to be minimized so we can move quickly to a happy ending.
Healing takes time.
Questions take time.
Trust takes time.
Jesus is patient.
We can be too.
